The header is where the BPM and sample rate are set; the frames hold the actual audio sample data; and the footer contains a “position” and “looping” flag.

Basically, the frames are the most important part of the file, and one of the reasons why it’s so difficult to extract the BPM from the file. If there are more than 1 frame, as in the case with MP3s, then frames of data will be interleaved, effectively making it impossible to figure out the BPM. This happens when the MP3 encoder detects that there’s a blank space in the stream, and the encoder will insert a frame of silence into the stream.

The good news is that, because of the way the MP3 encoder does things, it’s not as difficult as you might think. If you simply open the file in a text editor, you’ll find something to help you out.

You can also open a WAV file and use Audacity to determine the BPM by manually dragging the waveform and listening to the sound. This is a tedious process and requires a lot of listening skills, but it works just fine.


As mentioned before, the downside of the MP3 format is that, with more than 1 frame, the frames are interleaved; so, you’ll have to pay close attention to what’s happening with the file in order to locate the right “slot” for BPM extraction. This also applies to other “frameless” formats, such as FLAC.
