AutoCAD is a commercial computer-aided design (CAD) and drafting software application. Developed and marketed by Autodesk, AutoCAD was first released in December 1982 as a desktop app running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. Before AutoCAD was introduced, most commercial CAD programs ran on mainframe computers or minicomputers, with each CAD operator (user) working at a separate graphics terminal. AutoCAD is also available as mobile and web apps.

AutoCAD 20 years on:

The first version of AutoCAD was released in 1982. AutoCAD was developed in Santa Cruz, California as the first commercially available CAD application for microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. Developed by engineer John Walker, AutoCAD was originally built on an Apple II. By the time it was released to the public, there were only a handful of companies that could afford to buy an Apple II; however, companies such as Sun and IBM could not risk introducing Apple’s “monopoly” into their organizations. Even before AutoCAD was introduced, Apple had introduced Apple II disk BASIC, and it was no coincidence that Apple II BASIC became the original basis for AutoCAD. When the first public release of AutoCAD was introduced in December 1982, it cost $1,295 (or $20,000 adjusted for inflation). The first public showing of AutoCAD was at the 1983 National Computer Conference (NCC). Since 1983, AutoCAD’s popularity has grown steadily. The industry-standard file format for AutoCAD has been in use for over 30 years

The AutoCAD user interface is developed in Delphi, ObjectARX, C++, and Microsoft Visual Basic. The back-end of AutoCAD was initially written in Delphi, using Delphi 1, and Delphi 2, and then in a mix of C++ and Delphi. Delphi and ObjectARX are the base for all other platforms. Newer software, such as ArcGIS Desktop, uses a combination of AutoLISP and ObjectARX.

AutoCAD’s proprietary base API is called AutoLISP. Some of AutoCAD’s newer versions such as AutoCAD LT, are based on the ObjectARX API. ObjectARX is a component based object oriented API. This meant that the classes that represent AutoCAD’s objects are components, which are objects with their own properties. The components are what are called “objects” in other software. The ObjectARX API allows one to create objects through a component-based programming model.

AutoCAD software allows people with no programming skills to develop their own software, called add-ons, for AutoCAD. There are thousands of these available, covering a range of features such as 3D drawing or enabling users to create their own AutoCAD extensions. The Add-On Builder allows users to design a project using a table of components and classes for the user to create their own “tweaks” (or modifications) to AutoCAD features. Autodesk Exchange Apps can be created from an Add-on Builder project and they can be published on the Autodesk Exchange.

Autodesk Exchange Apps are commercially available on the Autodesk Application Store and Autodesk Exchange. Many people use the Autodesk Exchange to share 3D printable file formats and other related utilities with the community.

AutoCAD’s file format is the DWG (Drawing Exchange Format). The DXF is the native file format, and is more widely supported than AutoCAD’s proprietary native file format. AutoCAD also supports DWG, DXF, and even PDF file formats for viewing.

People who create AutoCAD extensions (called “plug-ins”) to AutoCAD can sell them through the Autodesk Exchange or another website. The Autodesk Exchange is the application store to the Autodesk Exchange Store where Autodesk sells various products for AutoCAD and other software such as SketchUp, Inventor,

Create a new drawing with the following properties: DPI 300, Raster: Geometry, Extension: DWG
Then double click the drawing to open it.
Find the imported SVG file in your Autodesk folder and place it onto your Desktop.

Now go to Autodesk>>Options>>Show Options to open the Options Window.

Click the Activate button on the Options Window to make sure the plugin is activated.

You should see “SVG” as a plug-in under Plugins in the Plugin List of the Options Window.

1. In the 3D viewport:

2. Right click on the newly added spline and press “RVT-SVG”.

3. In the Open dialog box, select the SVG file from your Desktop.

4. The red points will move according to the curve.

What’s New In?

Version 23 of AutoCAD has a feature called “markup import,” which lets you directly include PDF and printed paper into your drawing. Now with this new release, markups can be imported from this functionality.

When you open a file in markup import mode, you can quickly read and attach printed paper or PDF feedback to your drawing, or to parts of your drawing. You can then add this feedback directly to the drawing—for example, as annotation or to make changes.

You can also use marked-up pieces to create a prompt for you to create a new drawing. For example, you could use a part of your drawing to guide you on what to create.

You can attach feedback in the following ways:

In annotation, you can attach an annotated line, or add a paragraph with handwritten text.

You can attach an annotated circle, or add a short description.

You can attach comments about the plot area.

You can attach text in the layer panel.

You can attach text to all layers in the drawing, or to a specific layer.

The part of the design that is attached, is also marked up so you can immediately see what you’ve attached.

You can even directly import feedback from the Internet into your drawing.

Use of the markup function is now available in the drawing import feature, and can be used to import annotated pieces. Use the Include Annotated Files (IAD) tool, or Include Annotated Lines (IALL), and click the check box beside Include Markup.

Attached Markup will be automatically imported into the drawing. If the user wants to import the markers created in the previous step, they must add the file to the Drawing Manager, open it in the drawing, and then close the layer. The markers are then placed in the drawing, and you can choose to either to import the annotations as annotation or include the file in the drawing.

When using IALL, the annotation appears as lines in the plot area. You can use the IALL command to include the annotations into the current drawing by selecting Include Annotations.

When you use the command Include Markups, the markers appear in the layers panel.

This is a useful new feature for users with printers who can quickly and easily show customers how to use their equipment. You can easily include an annotated paper in your design, mark it up, and then
