NLTK is a freely available Python Package for developers, machine
learners, and computational linguists. Through Python and a
well-developed command line interface, you can inspect, annotate,
tokenize, stem and lemmatize, classify and transform texts. In addition,
you can access a large amount of linguistic data including hand-built
treebanks, parsed data from the Web and corpora from a variety of
tasks. Python NLTK is a strongly designed library and if you are
interested in NLP, we advise to read the corresponding chapter of
Python documentation.

Installation:
============
The NLTK distribution can be installed using the EasyInstall tool
available from For instance, you can
install NLTK by running ‘easy_install nltk’. This will install NLTK
in a directory of your choice.
Installing libraries using easy_install is very easy. You only
need to install nltk and change your path variable to refer to the
appropriate directory.
Alternatively, you can download the NLTK tarball
and install it manually
by running ‘python setup.py install’, which will put NLTK in a
directory of your choice.
Usage:
=====
To see the list of tasks supported by the NLTK, you can run
‘python -m nltk.task’ from the command line.
To check which tasks and modules are installed, you can use the
command ‘python -m nltk.parsing.util -m’ to list all modules, or
‘python -m nltk.stem -m’ to list all tasks.
If you want to try out an example, you can use the ‘python -m’ command
before installing the module. For instance, if you want to try out
the NLTK example ‘prntlnltk.ex

The Natural Language Toolkit (NLTK) is a Python library designed for computational linguistics and text processing that includes implementations of many of the statistical nlp and information extraction algorithms employed in natural language processing.
It can also import and export data in and out of a wide range of NLP applications and databases and read data files from many common formats such as CSV, TSV, and plain text files, as well as XML and JSON. It has a rich set of ready-to-use built-in modules for accessing over 50 major corpora such as the Penn Treebank, Brown Corpus, News Commentary, and the General Inquirer.
It also contains an extensive set of general-purpose functions (including several linear algebra and statistics routines) as well as utility functions and classes to support data access and formatting. And it provides APIs to support constructing and accessing functionality for different NLP applications, including reading and writing code in Matlab, R, Perl, and Java.
Interfaces for access to other popular NLP tools (Stanford Parser, GATE, MALLET, jMorpheus, Twine, among others) are also provided.

WordNet – A lexical database of English with frequencies of about 130 million words. Created by Princeton University (2005).
Python – The Hypertext Preprocessor, released by the Python Software Foundation in 1998, is an open source scripting language developed by Guido van Rossum. Python is a dynamic programming language with syntax resembling Perl, Java, and C. It is almost completely written in C, and its design philosophy emphasizes code readability. Python is used for all sorts of computing tasks ranging from scripting (e.g. for GUIs and batch processing), through Web development, to numerical computations and scientific and engineering programming.

The Natural Language Toolkit or (NLTK) is an open source natural language processing toolkit written in Python. It provides standard functionality for tasks in the area of lexical analysis, phrase structure, sentiment analysis, part-of-speech tagging and taggers for specific language tags. From the main NLTK website: “the NLTK package’s primary goal is to provide functionality commonly required by researchers working in the area of natural language processing (NLP).”
Docs:
Users are typically expected to start with the documentation if the tutorials are not sufficient for their needs. From the main
developer website: “Part of the NLTK docs include tutorials, a user’s guide, glossary, and a collection of sample code.”
Documentation:
Most of the documentation is located under the docs directory of the main website. You can also access the developer’s documentation directly from

Want to install the latest version of NLTK? Make sure to also install the examples.
Please note that you will need the desktop version of Python for this install to be successful.
Installation
Installing NLTK is fairly straightforward. You can run one of two installation scripts depending on your platform. On Ubuntu or Debian Linux you can run the following command to install from source:
# apt-get install python-nltk

… which will install version 3.0.1
On Windows, you can find the latest version of NLTK here: We also provide this file on the main site.
Installing NLTK for development on Windows requires an additional step. Please see the development section for further details.
