The software simulates the motion of the Sun around the galactic center, given certain orbital parameters. A normal model of the galaxy is assumed as rotational symmetry in all three spatial dimensions of the Sun’s orbit.

The user can choose the mass of the Sun and the amount of mass added to the Sun as an absolute deviation from the (theoretical) mass of the Sun. Based on these settings, the user is able to define the initial velocity of the Sun.

A dedicated user interface is made for easy selection of the initial angular position and velocity of the Sun.

The orbit of the Sun is integrated for a time of 5 Gyr. The time is divided into time steps of 1 Myr. This time is chosen as it is close to the time the Sun will finish its main-sequence lifetime.

The simulation ends if the Sun leaves the galaxy.

Relation to other software:

The results of the simulation can be displayed as a scatter plot showing the Sun’s position as a function of time. A plot is also generated and saved to a file. This enables anyone who wants to analyze the solar system to do so. The program simulates the motion of the Sun around the galactic center and thus can be used to model an analogue of the Solar System.

Limitations:

The current model of the galaxy does not make use of its shape as observed today. The Sun is assumed to be a point mass, the stellar bulge is neglected and the Milky Way is modeled as axially symmetric.

The numerical integrator is not adaptive. The timesteps chosen are too small, which generates a lot of noise. Using a smaller timestep is possible, but the precision of the results is decreased.

Author: The author is an amateur astronomer, who wishes to remain anonymous. The software was coded during an asteroid program, for which the author’s PC was not powerful enough.

First of all, run the installer to enable Star System Simulator to run.

In the dialog that appears, navigate to the folder where you want to store the created application. Then, select that folder.

Create or open the file data.xml from the application.

Save that file, and exit the application.

This is a small WPF application that uses geometric transformations to give a 3D presentation of multiple planets, including their positions and orbits. The current version of the Star System Simulator application (3.0), is a small tool that helps in simulating star system positions during the different stages of the main sequence life span of stars. The simulations are made using the Euler-Cromer method.
1 – The application simulate a star from birth (as an A-star) to death (a white dwarf or neutron star). The simulation can be performed in different stages in the main sequence life span of the star and for different number of stars, however the duration and the total number of the simulation (simulation time and number of stars) can be defined by the user. The initial position of the simulation is set as the centre of the system and the simulation result is represented in a 3D scatter plot. The user can define the distance of the stars from each other in order to determine any cluster formation. The stars can be represented as circles, stars can overlap and the number of stars can be defined by the user.
The application allows the user to set the initial mass (by sets of different masses for different types of stars) of the system to be simulated and the conditions to be defined for different stages of the main sequence life span of the star (specified by the user). When the simulation ends the final mass of the star (determined by the end of the simulation or by the user) and the final rotational velocity (by the user or determined by the end of the simulation) are displayed. The position of the star at the end of the simulation is presented by the user by setting the initial position (by setting the start of the simulation), the movement speed of the star (by setting the step in the simulation, defining the simulation duration and number of stars) and the rotation speed of the star (by setting the rotation axis).
