Figure 6-1 shows two Adobe Photoshop layers. The effect you see is called the Liquify filter, which makes any of the layer’s contents move and stretch.

Photoshop layers help you create your own artwork and transform your images using the different functions and filters. These kinds of features make Photoshop one of the best image manipulation programs available.

Getting Started with Layers

When you create a new Photoshop file, a window appears with an area where you can start designing images. This area is known as the workspace and has four main areas:

The Layers palette: This palette shows where your artwork is divided up into independent layers. To access the Layers palette, click the arrow button on the lower-left corner of the window or click the New Layer button at the upper-left corner of the workspace. By default, Photoshop creates eight layers, although this can be changed from the Tools panel.

The Paths palette: This palette represents the path you trace when you’re creating artwork. Click the arrow button at the bottom of the workspace to bring up the Paths palette.

The Image menu: Use this menu to view and work with your image. You can also create a slide show for viewing your images by clicking Image⇒Slideshow.

The Filter palette: The Filter palette is not used to manipulate the data in your image, as much as it is to apply filters to your image, which is discussed in Chapters 18 to 22.

Starting out on a new image

When you start a new image in Photoshop, a four-column tabbed palette appears at the top of the workspace. The top two columns hold the Layers and Paths palettes; the bottom two columns hold the original image and your new artwork.

As you create your new image, you may use the bottom-left pane to adjust your workspace background to match the background you’ve selected for your new image. You can even drag the corner of a workspace or the workspace itself to change the size of your workspace as you create your image.

Photoshop comes with quite a few default layers that you can use to start the design process. But you don’t have to start with the default image. As a matter of fact, you can start with a blank canvas and create your own image from scratch.

Pixlr-o-matic lets you add filters and graphic elements to your photos. You can even turn them into memes, GIFs or stickers with the built-in editors.

The fastest website builders are Wix and SquareSpace. We chose them because they offer reliable and cost-effective website builders, which are easy to use for non-techies.

Pixlr is a robust photo editing app that lets you add new features such as filters and emojis. It has a huge library of free graphics.

Adobe Lightroom is a professional photo manager and workflow app. It features smart camera controls, auto-tagging capabilities and tools for automated organization.

Of all of these options, I recommend that you take Photoshop Elements for a test drive if you’re considering switching from Photoshop. You’re less likely to be intimidated by the user interface, which is very different from the real-time, professional interface found in Photoshop.

In addition, you’ll also learn all the basic and advanced editing techniques. (You can learn those more in-depth in this book.) One very nice thing about Photoshop Elements is that you can get it through the Adobe Creative Cloud, which gives you access to the latest version of the program at no cost.

On the other hand, Photoshop is a very popular desktop application so it’s the one most people will have at hand. If you haven’t tried it already, I recommend you check it out to see if you like it and if it has the features you need.

How Much Does Photoshop Cost?

Adobe Photoshop is extremely pricey—about $9,000 for a single-user license at the time of writing (that’s $2,289 for the first year, according to this study).

Many professional users and small businesses are required to have the software. That means a professional market for Photoshop will always exist. However, for those who don’t have to have it, Photoshop Elements is a lot less expensive—$299 or $500 depending on which version you want.

In any case, if you’re interested in switching from Photoshop to Elements, you’ll probably want to buy a trial version of Photoshop to get the hang of the program. Once you’re used to it, you can decide how much Photoshop or Photoshop Elements you want to buy.

How to hide a window in python

I am trying to write a script that when triggered will open another window (say “Window 2”). I’ve done the first part by using subprocess.Popen. Now I want to be able to close the first (this is before “Window 2”) and then be able to say something like this if I did “Window 2”:
I want to be able to close the first window and still have Window 2 be open
Sorry in advance if this is a really simple question but I am new to Python.

It sounds like you want a two step “open”. The first step should have it’s own subprocesses, the second step is what you’re talking about.
The most straightforward solution to this is to have a parent process that launches a single child process, and once the child process is launched you want to just keep it around. That child process could be responsible for opening “Window 2”. Then, from your main process, you could either terminate it (which will make it disappear), or kill it (which will make it disappear).
This is one of the more common reasons for using subprocess.Popen, as opposed to or something.

Erased Tapes Roundup: An All-Star Effort by Los Lobos

Los Lobos’ concert at M.I.A.’s Best of the East festival was my introduction to Los Lobos’ Cesar Chavez. Their newest record, released on Roadrunner Records, was recorded in February and was completed during the month of the band’s East Coast tour. But with one of the strongest song-writing teams in rock and roll history (that’s Steve Berlin and David Hidalgo) and amazing musicians, it shouldn’t be a surprise that they deliver a solid collection of songs.

They started by covering Pink Floyd’s “Have a Cigar” in honor of the 50th anniversary of the group’s 1967 album. Then they played what most people would consider to be their masterpiece, “Universal Harvester,” the opening track of their 2002 major label breakthrough, “In with the Old, In With the New.”

And this was the moment of truth when I was happy to hear this new record. The band broke into another, not quite as strong track, “In My Dream,” from their debut album, 1985’s “Grass,” and then went into the first song from their best-selling, 2000 album, “Kiko,” “Coyote,” from which it begins. It is cool to hear their first recording as a quartet, because some of the songs from the debut are not really strong or different enough to fit their current sound.

The band’s heavy use of pedal steel guitar by Benmont Tench and a keyboard by David Hidalgo gives each song a different rhythm, even though all of the instruments are live. These instruments seem almost like extra vocalists. Hidalgo’s voice is much stronger than Steve Berlin’s, a difficult feat, and Tench’s pedal steel is a joy to listen to. Tench has been a member of Blues Traveler, so his playing is a perfect fit for Los Lobos. The combination of these players was so effortless that the songs sounded like they had been played in a studio.

After “Coyote,” I skipped through to the end of the disc and watched the performances of two covers: “Sunny Afternoon” from “Grass” and “This Is the Life” by the Grateful Dead. As I listen to the two covers, I can hear the difference in the band’s playing. The Grateful Dead cover sounded too clean, too slick. But the Los Lobos version is much
