Many tutorials to learn Photoshop can be found at

In this chapter, you find information about what Photoshop is, how to use it to manipulate images, and information about making your own digital art in Photoshop. With these steps, you also discover how to crop and resize photos and create unique effects in Photoshop. I show you how to capture and edit raw images, use Photoshop to create and fix graphics, and how to use the many filters that Photoshop offers, all without losing the subtlety of the original image.

Using Photoshop for Manipulating Photos

When you look at pictures, you see people and places. But like any good photographer, you may want to change that. You may want to lighten or darken a photo to brighten or darken the subject matter, or you may want to remove unwanted objects, like shadows, from a photo.

In this section, I show you how to edit photos with Photoshop. I also give you a few tips on how to manipulate images and how to avoid ruining a photo.

Adjusting images

The goal of adjusting an image is to change the appearance of the image. You use a program like Photoshop to correct things you don’t like in a photo, like a picture that’s too dark or light, or a photo that doesn’t look like the subject.

Adjusting photos depends on a few things:

Matching the brightness. You can edit an image by using the exposure slider, adjusting the color, and desaturating the colors.

Adding contrast. You can add contrast through tools such as Levels and Curves to increase or decrease the contrast of an image or adjust shadows and highlights.

Adjusting clarity. Sometimes you simply need a sharper photo. You can add clarity by erasing parts of a photo by using the Eraser tool, or by using another tool such as the Magic Wand to select an area of the image and add more clarity (refer to Chapter 8 for more on the Magic Wand).

Adjusting colors. You can create a bright, appealing photo, or you can enhance the colors in an image by using tools such as Curves or Levels to desaturate the colors or lighten and darken the colors in the image.

Refining your image. You can fix problems in an image by using the tools discussed in Chapter 5. Your main problem areas to fix are objects or images that are in the wrong place

What is Photoshop?

Adobe Photoshop is an image editing program from Adobe Systems. It is a free program that’s been used to edit photos, videos, and web graphics. Photoshop is widely used by professional photographers, web designers, and graphic designers. Many images that you see on Facebook, Twitter, Google, and Instagram were created with Photoshop.

Professional photographers use Photoshop as a tool to add filters, retouch, and add special effects. The user interface is designed for artists, writers, and web designers to create original images. The user interface is modeled after a sketch pad that has layers for drawing, paint, and text.

To get started with Photoshop, you should be able to read and write documents, select an object, and draw lines. You should also be able to crop an image. Photoshop supports the canvas-like drawing board where the images are stored. You can crop, resize, and add filters. Finally, you can paint, delete elements, and make corrections with the eyedropper.

How is Photoshop different from Photoshop Elements?

Adobe Photoshop costs $99 for a personal license, and Adobe Photoshop Elements costs $149. Adobe provides a free photo editor (Adobe Photoshop Express) that allows you to edit and save photos without the need to purchase the program. Adobe Photoshop Elements is a free alternative that focuses on editing pictures, creating graphics, and retouching images. You can also use Photoshop Elements to create graphics for web pages, e-books, or presentations.

Adobe Photoshop is a full version that comes with high-quality filters and a robust set of tools to create new images. Photoshop Elements lacks many filters and has a simple interface. Photoshop Elements is an easy program to use because of a simple interface and fewer features.

What’s New in the?

In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to use brushes to paint a human face.
Let’s start the process by creating a new document. Make sure that it is set to 24-bit color mode. At the top of the document, select the Pen tool. Click to place it, hold the SHIFT key down, and drag the mouse to create a new stroke. This will be used to draw our face. Select the Brush tool (found under the tools folder on the menu bar) and pick a size that looks right for our face, like 5 pixels. Paint a crosshair in the center of the face. Click once to fill the crosshair with black, like so:

In this step, we’ll begin painting the face. Create a new layer by clicking on the bottom-right corner of the layer palette and choosing New Layer from the menu. Highlight this layer, click on the eye in the Layers palette, and drag it below the crosshair (Fig. 2). Repeat these steps for the mouth, and for the nose. You will want to move these layers below the crosshair layer so that you can erase the outer boundaries with transparency instead of erasing the faces with a solid color. Try to keep the transition smooth.

Next, erase the hard edges of each layer. For each layer, start by clicking on the layer mask thumbnail in the Layers palette. Choose the Eraser tool (found under the Tools folder on the menu bar). With a soft edge, click once to erase along the line in the eye or mouth. This will outline the object and erase everything outside of the object (Fig. 3).

Now you can start painting the image. Choose any brush (found under the Brushes folder on the menu bar). Draw the basic shapes of the eyes, nose, and mouth (Fig. 4). While the brush is active, use the SHIFT key to move the mouse pointer anywhere on the page and click to repeat the brush stroke. Press the ESC key to stop the brush. Repeat this process for each layer.

To create larger eyes, hold the Alt key and increase the width of the brush. You can also use any brushes to create the eyes. However, you might want to think about the size of the brush to ensure the eyes don’t get too big,
